Chapter 14

The summit of the Cinder Peaks wasn't a mountain top. It was the rim of a crucible.

Dominic pulled himself over the final ledge of obsidian, his breath wheezing in his lungs like steam in a pressure cooker. The air here didn't just smell of sulfur; it smelled of fundamental, elemental destruction. It tasted like ozone and ash.

Below them lay the caldera—a massive, circular bowl filled with a lake of white-hot magma that bubbled and popped with the force of artillery shells.

"Barrier check!" Dominic yelled, his voice barely audible over the roar of the volcano.

"Critical!" Vesper screamed back. She was slathering the last of the Hydra Cream onto her face, but the heat was so intense the grease was evaporating into white smoke seconds after touching her skin. "We have five minutes, Chef! Maybe less! We are literally baking!"

"Then we make it quick," Dominic growled.

He scanned the lake. There was no nest. No pile of sticks. There was only the fire.

In the center of the magma, a cyclone of flame began to spin. It tightened, faster and faster, pulling the ambient heat into a singularity. The magma bowed upward, defying gravity, sucked into the vortex.

Then, with a sound like a thunderclap, the fire took shape.

Wings of blue plasma unfurled, spanning a hundred feet. A beak of white-hot energy snapped open. Eyes like dying stars blazed into existence.

[The Eternal Phoenix (Lvl ??)] [Type: Elemental Avatar] [Status: Burning]

"That's not a bird," Kevin whispered, shielding his eyes from the blinding glare. "That’s a solar flare."

"It's the pilot light," Dominic corrected. He unslung his pack. "And it's running too hot."

He stepped forward to the edge of the crater. He grabbed a chunk of the Magma Crab meat they had harvested—a prime cut, pink and sweet.

"Hey!" Dominic shouted, winding up. "Service!"

He threw the meat. It arched through the air, spinning toward the Phoenix.

Dominic expected the bird to catch it. He expected it to eat.

Instead, the meat hit the creature's heat aura ten feet from its beak. FLASH. The protein didn't cook. It disintegrated. It turned into carbon dust instantly, erased from existence.

The Phoenix turned its head. It didn't look at the food. It looked at the mana radiating from Vesper. It looked at the life force pulsing in Valerius.

"It doesn't want the crab," Dominic realized, his stomach dropping. "It wants the fuel."

The Phoenix screeched. It was a sound that vibrated the fillings in their teeth. The bird flapped its massive wings once.

A wave of superheated air—a visible wall of distortion—slammed into the ridge.

"Shields!" Valerius roared.

The knight stepped in front of Vesper, raising his battered shield. The heat wave hit him.

HISSSSSSS.

The Hydra Cream coating his armor turned black and flaked off. The silver metal beneath began to glow dull red. Valerius grunted, sinking to one knee as the sheer thermal pressure tried to cook him inside his suit.

"I can't hold it!" Valerius yelled. "My armor is soft! The metal is softening!"

Vesper shrieked as the hem of her robe caught fire. She slapped it out frantically. "Chef! We can't fight physics! It's pure energy!"

Dominic stood his ground, squinting against the glare.
